Innocent Smoothies Big Knit: Elephant Hat

I love the Big Knit for _4 reasons;

  1. Each hat is super quick to make
  2. You can be so creative with it
  3. The perfect way to use up oddments of yarn
  4. And best of all, it’s for charity!

Here is my latest design – the Elephant hat

Materials needed; pair of 4mm straight knitting needles, grey DK yarn, small amount of black yarn for eyes, darning needle to make up

K = knit

P = purl

Gt-st = garter stitch (knit all rows)

St-st = stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row)

K2tog = knit two stitches together

Using 4mm knitting needles and grey DK yarn, cast on 31 stitches

Rows 1-2: gt-st 2 rows

Rows 3-14: beginning with a knit row, st-st 12 rows

Row 15: (k2tog) repeat until 1 stitch remaining, k1 (16 sts remaining)

Row 16: p row

Row 17: (k2tog) to end (8 sts remaining)

Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches, leaving strand of yarn long enough to sew the seams of the head

Ears (make 2)

Cast on 12 stitches

Rows 1-2: gt-st 2 rows

Row 3: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog

Row 4: k row

Rows 5-8: repeat the last 2 rows a further 2 times (6 sts remaining)

Cast off knit-wise

Cast off

Making Up

Sew the seams of the head together. Attach the ears to either side of the head. Sew the seams of the trunk together and flatten to attach to the front of the head. Darn on two eyes with a small piece of black yarn.
